Super 8 Captures #1 at U.S. Box Office
J.J. Abrams' ode of early Steven Spielberg film, SUPER 8, captured the #1 spot at the U.S. box office for the weekend of June 10-12, 2011. Paramount brought in $35.5 million from the film with vfx from Industrial Light & Magic.
Last week's #1, Fox's X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, placed second with $24.1 million. With vfx from 4DMax, Cinedev, Cinesite, Digital Domain, Hydraulx. Luma Pictures, Method Studios, Moving Picture Company (MPC), Persistence of Vision Ent., Proof, Rhythm and Hues, The Senate Visual Effects, The Third Floor, Trixter Film, The Visual Effects Company and Weta Digital, the fifth X-MEN film has amassed $98 million to date.
Warner Bros.' THE HANGOVER PART II woke up in third with $17.7 million. The raunchy comedy has earned $215.7 million.
DreamWorks Animation's KUNG FU PANDA 2 kicked in at #4, adding $16.5 million to its $126.8 million cume.
Disney's PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES docked in fifth, hauling in $10.9 million. With vfx from BlueBolt, Cinesite, Hirota Paint Industries (HPI), Hydraulx, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Method Studios, CIS Hollywood, Kerner Optical, Mova, Moving Picture Company (MPC), Pixel Liberation Front and Rising Sun Pictures, the pirate fantasy film has box office booty totaling $208.9 million.
Universal's BRIDESMAIDS walked down the aisle to sixth, earning another $10.1 million. The female HANGOVER-like comedy has a cume of $123.8 million.
Relativity Media's JUDY MOODY AND THE NOT BUMMER SUMMER had a disappointing debut, landing in seventh with $6.08 million.
Sony Pictures Classic's MIDNIGHT IN PARIS stayed firm in eighth, bringing in an additional $5.83 million. The Woody Allen comedy has earned $13.9 million since its opening.
Paramount's THOR had the biggest fall in the top ten, going from sixth to ninth. With vfx from BUF, CEG Media, Digital Domain, Fuel VFX, Hirota Paint Industries (HPI), Legacy Effects, Luma Pictures, The Base Studio, The Third Floor and Whiskytree, the Marvel superhero film added $2.44 million to its $173.7 million cume.
Closing out the top ten was Universal's FAST FIVE. With vfx from BlueBolt, Factory VFX, Method Studios, Moving Picture Company (MPC), Pixomondo, Proof and With A Twist Studio, the racing heist flick put $1.73 million into its total pot of $205.1 million.
