Goro Miyazaki’s acclaimed 2D animated feature From Up on Poppy Hill (Kokuriko-Zaka Kara) begins its New York and Los Angeles theatrical run today, courtesy of independent studio GKIDS.
From the legendary and celebrated Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Ponyo, and The Secret World of Arrietty) comes From Up on Poppy Hill, the uniquely inspired and highly anticipated coming-of-age story from Goro Miyazaki and Hayao Miyazaki. Set in Yokohama in 1963, this lovingly hand-drawn film centers on Umi (voiced by Sarah Bolger) and Shun (voiced by Anton Yelchin) and the budding romance that develops as they join forces to save their high school’s ramshackle clubhouse from demolition.
The top-grossing Japanese film of 2011 and winner of the Japan Academy Prize for Animation, From Up on Poppy Hill captures the innocence of new love as well as the beauty of Yokohama’s harbor and lush surroundings. With its rich color palette, stunning exteriors, sun-drenched gardens, bustling cityscapes and painterly detail, From Up on Poppy Hill provides a pure, sincere, and nuanced evocation of the past, and marks yet another creative triumph for Studio Ghibli.
The English-language dub of the film also features the voices of Gillian Anderson (X-Files, Princess Mononoke), Jamie Lee Curtis (A Fish Called Wanda, Freaky Friday), Bruce Dern (Silent Running, Coming Home), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men, Drive), Ron Howard (Happy Days, American Graffiti), Chris Noth (Sex in the City, The Good Wife) and Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), as well as Beau Bridges (The Fabulous Baker Boys), comedian Jeff Dunham, Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan, The Hunger Games), Emily Osment (Hannah Montana), Charles Saxton, and Alex Wolff (The Naked Brothers Band).
Karey Kirkpatrick (The Rescuers Down Under, Chicken Run, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) wrote the English translation and veteran sound guru Gary Rydstrom (Finding Nemo, Brave, Wreck-It Ralph), who also worked on The Secret World of Arrietty served as ADR director on the project.
