Last Exorcism Possess #1 at Box Office
Lionsgate's THE LAST EXORCISM took possession of the #1 slot at the U.S. box office for the weekend of August 27-29, 2010. The handheld horror flick (with vfx from Gradient Effects) made $21.3 million.
Debuting in second, Screen Gems' heist flick, TAKERS, just missed the top spot with $21 million.
Two-week box office champ THE EXPENDABLES slipped to third with $9.5 million. The Lionsgate hit (with vfx from Fantasy II Film Effects) has made $82 million to date.
EAT PRAY LOVE slipped to fourth, bringing in another $7 million. The Julia Roberts romance has a cume of $60.7 million.
Sony's THE OTHER GUYS held strong in fifth with $6.6 million. The action comedy has brought in $99.3 million.
Fox's VAMPIRES SUCK tumbled from second to sixth, raising another $5.3 million. The gag fest has sucked up $27.9 million in two weeks.
Warner Bros.' INCEPTION showed some box office resilience moving back up to seventh from ninth, collecting an additional $5.12 million. After seven weeks in theaters, the mind-bending thriller has dreamed up $270.7 million.
After a weak debut, NANNY MCPHEE RETURNS dug in its heels at #8, making another $4.74 million. With vfx from Framestore, the family fantasy has a cume of $17 million.
Miramax's THE SWITCH arrived in ninth, donating $4.66 million to its $16.5 million cume.
Finishing off the top ten, Dimension Films' PIRANHA 3D gobbled up another $4.31 million. With vfx from NewBreed Vfx, Gradient Effects, Intelligent Creatures, Mr. X, Tippett Studio and inner-D, the campy gore fest has earned $18.3 million thus far.
