Winners for the competition at the 2013 edition of the Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF) were announced at a festive award ceremony on Sunday, March 24. HAFF is the largest animation film festival of the Netherlands highlighting films from art-house and commercial, to cartoons and 3D.
Hisko Hulsing received the first Grand Prix Dutch animation for his film Junkyard, in which a man is stabbed on the subway. Before he dies, childhood memories flash by of his best friend. The jury noted, “This film is a great piece of storytelling. Love, hatred and despair – the emotions in this film are really intense. It shows great craftsmanship.
Lei Lei and Thomas Sauvin won the Grand Prix shorts in the non-narrative category with Recycled, which features some three thousand color negatives found at Beijing rubbish dumps that together show, at lightning speed, the city, its inhabitants and its transience. Lei and Sauvin have been invited to put together a program for HAFF 2014.The jury commented, “A film that unifies concept, technique and sound to create an almost epic portrait of anonymous humanity.”
Jérémy Clapin received the Grand Prix shorts in the narrative category with his film Palmipedarium, which follows a country boy who knows ducks quite well. They fly, swim and make noise. One day, he finds a remarkable bird. Clapin has been invited to put together a program for HAFF 2014. The jury wrote, “A film which greatly impressed us with its seamless and elegant direction creating a powerful yet delicately understated setting.”
María Verónica Ramírez wins the Grand Prix features prize with her film Ánima Buenos Aires, a portrait of the Argentinean capital of Buenos Aires by different filmmakers and cartoonists, showing aspects of the soul of this magical metropolis in this era of ruthless globalization. The jury said, “The winning movie succeeds in evoking emotion with recognizable and everyday subjects.”
Jonas Ott received the Grand Prix European studenten films for his film Washed Ashore, in which a drowning person washes ashore on the beach of a big city. Out of curiosity, he starts exploring. But the people he meets are strange and superficial.“We were impressed by the film’s depth and surprising turns, its intensity, and its vaudeville perversity,” reported the jury.
