Flash Gordon Kidnapped By Sony
A bidding war over the 1930s comic strip FLASH GORDON ended with Sony buying the rights from Hearst to make a live-action film, according to VARIETY.
SAHARA director Breck Eisner is attached to direct, and Neal Mortiz will produce via Original Films. The deal is a high six figure to seven figure if the film gets made.
In the original strip, Flash Gordon was a handsome polo player who was kidnapped and taken to the planet Mongo, where he battled evil ruler Ming the Merciless.
With the success of IRON MAN, studios are showing more of an appetite for franchise-ready fare, and in the case of FLASH GORDON, the intention is to create an edgy incarnation of the classic serial.
