<em>Consuming Spirits</em> Opens in New York December 12

Film Forum is proud to present the US theatrical premiere of CONSUMING SPIRITS on Wednesday, December 12. Just in time for Christmas comes this epitome of holiday counter-programming: Chris Sullivan's animated dystopia is light-years away from the candy-coated universe of cartoon-for-kids. Calling Sullivan's characters neurotic would only scratch the surface. They're crabby, wrinkled, confused, frustrated, filled with longing and regret. Set in small town Appalachia, their world has been called "a dark soul mate to Garrison Keillor's much-loved Lake Wobegon."

The film's plot is set in motion by a car accident that kills a nun. The filmmaker's self-described "sprawling diorama" swirls around these three characters:

Earl Gray: 67 years old, a tall and formidable former radio and newspaper personality, known for his gardening advice column. He lives with Pufferballs, world's oldest cat.
Gentian Violet: at 42, an anonymous newspaper paste-up employee; she lives with her Alzheimer's-stricken mother and dates Victor Blue.
Victor Blue: a 38-year-old newspaper employee, who with Gentian, has an amateur Irish musical duo, The Shalelies; he lives his life as "a terminal social service project."

CONSUMING SPIRITS will have a two-week engagement, December 12-25, at Film Forum, West Houston Street (West of 6th Avenue), with screenings daily at 1:00, 3:30, 6:30, and 9:00.
