Cleopatra Musical In 3-D Next For Soderbergh
Director Steven Soderbergh is planning a 3-D live-action rock musical about Egyptian queen Cleopatra, possibly to star Catherine Zeta-Jones as the queen and Hugh Jackman as her lover, Marc Antony, per VARIETY.
Greg Jacobs and Casey Silver are producing the estimated $30 million film, which is being shopped for financing and distribution over the next two weeks.
Music will come from indie rockers Guided by Voices with a script by James Greer, former bassist for the band and an author.
This would be Soderbergh's first musical. His Benicio Del Toro-led biopic CHE is coming out soon and he recently wrapped THE INFORMANT with a bulked up Matt Damon. Soderbergh is also working on a Liberace film at Warner Bros. from writer Richard LaGravanese. Michael Douglas is attached to play the flamboyant entertainer with Damon to play his companion.
VARIETY's calls Thursday to Soderbergh's reps went unreturned.
