The Hollywood Reporter . Opening in 72 markets, the animated comedy made approximately $55 million.
The film debuted at #1 in most of those markets. Directed by Carlos Saldanha, the music-filled flick did particularly well in Brazil where it brought in $8.3 million at 1,013 locations, making it the biggest animated opening of all time in the country. In Russia, the film scored the biggest opening of the year with $10.4 million. The next biggest hauls included $5.3 million in Mexico, $3.4 million in Germany, and $2.3 million in the U.K.
The Fox Animation and Blue Sky production opens this week in Canada, France, Belgium and Italy as well.
