Texas Chainsaw 3D took first place this weekend with a better-than-expected $23 million. Produced and financed by Millennium Films for $20 million, the seventh installment in the slasher franchise marks another victory for Lionsgate, which crossed $1 billion in domestic ticket sales in 2012 for the first time.
Django Unchained, from the Weinstein Co., came in a strong number two, grossing $20.1 million to jump the $100 million mark at the domestic box office. Surpassing Les Mis with a total of $106.4 million, Django is on track to become Quentin Tarantino's top-grossing film in North America.
Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey placed number three in its fourth weekend, grossing $17.5 million for a domestic total of $263.8 million. The tentpole, from New Line and MGM, has now earned north of $820 million worldwide.
Tom Hooper's Les Miserables, opening opposite Django on Christmas Day, also jumped the $100 million mark domestically. The film reached the milestone in 13 days, the fastest for any musical. Combined with international earnings of $81 million, Les Mis has earned $184.6 million worldwide.
Twentieth Century Fox family comedy Parental Guidance placed fifth, grossing $10.1 million at the domestic box office for a total of $52.8 million.
Paramount’s Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise, came in sixth place, earning $9.3 million on its third weekend out for a domestic total of $64.8 million.
Universal's This Is 40, from Judd Apatow, came in seventh place, grossing $8.6 million for a total of $54.5 million.
In eighth place, Steven Spielberg's historical drama Lincoln, from DreamWorks and Disney, brought in $5.3 million for a total of $143.9 million.
Barbra Streisand-Seth Rogen comedy The Guilt Trip came in ninth this weekend, grossing $4.5 million for the weekend for a domestic total of $31.2 million.
Rounding out the list at number 10, the Matt Damon-John Krasinski drama Promised Land, from director Gus Van Sant,expanded nationwide, grossing $4.3 million for a total of $4.7 million.
