Opening on Friday the 13th, horror sequel Insidious Chapter 2 topped the box office, scaring up $41 million for its debut. Directed by James Wan, the low-budget sequel is a win for distributor Film District and Blumhouse Productions, which reportedly made the film for $5 million.
Also opening this weekend, Luc Besson's mob comedy The Family came in second place, earning $14.5 million for Relativity Media.
In its second weekend of release, last week’s chart topper Riddick came in third place at the domestic box office, bringing Universal and Vin Diesel an additional $7 million for total of $31.3 million. Overseas, Riddick took in $9.6 million for a foreign total of $22 million.
Disney’s Planes, now in its sixth week at the box office, came in at number seven, earning $3.1 million for a domestic total of $83 million. The animated Cars spinoff, which cost $50 million to produce, brought in $10.7 million overseas for an international total of $55.8 million.
Sony’s Elysium added $2.1 million this weekend, coming in ninth place and bringing the Neil Blomkamp -directed sci-fi feature’s domestic total to $88.4 million. Overseas, Elysium came in seventh, bringing in $8.5 million for an international total of $232.4 million.
Fox’s Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters rounds out the list at number 10, earning an additional $1.8 million for a domestic total of $62 million. Now in its sixth week out, the franchise installment made $7.8 million overseas for an international total of $165.5.
While not in the top 10, Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 2, now in its 11th week at the box office, continued to do impressive business, taking in $1.3 million for a 13th place finish and a domestic total of $359 million.
Sony’s The Smurfs 2 led the foreign box office this weekend with $17.6 million. Over half of that came from China, where the movie opened in first place with $10.2 million. It also debuted in Australia, where it took in $2 million. To date, the family sequel has grossed $220 million overseas.
White House Down added $13 million this weekend, bringing the Roland Emmerich-directed action movie’s foreign total to $98 million. Box office numbers were obtained on boxofficemojo.com.
