Box Office Report: 'Despicable Me 2' Tops 'Pacific Rim'
Universal and Illumination Entertainment's box office hit Despicable 2 held onto the top spot on the box office charts in its second weekend, grossing $44.8 million for a domestic total of $229.2 million. The 3D animated feature also came in number one internationally, grossing $55.7 million for a foreign total of $243.2 million and a worldwide total of $472.4 million.
In second place, Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, financed for $190 million by Legendary Pictures and distribution and marketing partner Warner Bros., opened to $38.3 million at the North American box office. IMAX venues accounted for $7.3 million in ticket sales. Overseas, the 3D tentpole feature, which pits giant robots against alien monsters, took in $53 million for a worldwide total of $91.3 million.
Sony's Grown Ups 2 opened to $42.5 million, placing third on the domestic box office charts.
Fox's Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy comedy The Heat came in fourth in its third outing, jumping the $100 million mark and ending the weekend with a North American total of $112.4 million.
Disney’s The Lone Ranger came in fifth, taking in $11.1 million in its second weekend for a domestic total of $77.1 million. Overseas, the big-budget feature brought in $12.7 million for an international total of $48 million and worldwide total of $119.1 million.
Disney and Pixar's Monsters University, directed by Dan Scanlon, came in sixth over its fourth weekend out, taking in $10.6 million. The animated prequel has so far grossed an estimated $237.8 million.
In seventh place, Paramount’s zombie feature World War Z, produced by Brad Pitt and directed by Marc Forster, brought in $9.4 million for a domestic total of $177.1 million.
Director Roland Emmerich's White House Down came in eighth place over its third weekend at the box office, bringing in $6.2 million for a domestic total of $63 million.
Standup comedy feature Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, from Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment, came in ninth during its sophomore weekend, earning $5 million for a domestic total of $26.4 million.
Rounding out the list at number 10 is Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ Man of Steel. The film made $4.8 million in in its fifth weekend out for a domestic total of $281 million.
