CARTOON, the European Association of Animation Film, has announced the five director finalists for the 18th edition of the Cartoon d'Or, the only European prize specific to animated short films.
The candidates will have the opportunity to attend the Cartoon Forum Ludwigsburg in Germany and present their films to more than 700 professionals. The screening will take place on Thursday, September 18, during the official Cartoon d'Or Award ceremony, where the name of the winner will be unveiled.
This year's finalists are: Vincent Bierrewaerts for THE BRIDGE (LE PONT), Belgium/France; Arnaud Demuynck for BREAKOUT (L'EVASION), Belgium; Pierre-Luc Granjon for THE WHITE WOLF (LE LOUP BLANC), France; Benjamin Renner for A MOUSE'S TALE (LA QUEUE DE LA SOURIS), France; and Matthew Walker for JOHN AND KAREN, U.K.
The Cartoon d'Or 2008 jury is composed by directors Enzo D'Alo from Italy, Raul Garcia from Spain and Michael Coldewey from Germany.
Competition for this prize is exclusively reserved for winners of awards from one of the nine greatest animation festivals in Europe. This edition of Cartoon d'Or is supported by the EU MEDIA Programme and the ceremony gala will be hosted by SWR (Sudwestrundfunk), the public broadcasting company for the southwest of Germany.
The objective of this contest is to recognize and support new creative talents in European animation. Thus, the winner will receive financial aid for his next animation project, as well as a prestigious trophy. Cartoon d'Or 2008 partner festivals are: Anima - Brussels (Belgium); Animadrid -- Madrid (Spain); Cinanima -- Espinho (Portugal); Encounters Short Film Festival -- Bristol (United Kingdom); Festival International du Film d'Animation -- Annecy (France); Fredrikstad Animation Festival -- Fredrikstad (Norway); I Castelli Animati -- Genzano di Roma (Italy); International Trickfilm Festival Stuttgart (Germany) and International Festival of Animated Films -- Trebon (Czech Republic).
Cartoon Forum is the annual European rendezvous to support the coproduction, financing and distribution of animation series for television and new media platforms. The 19th edition of this event is being held from September 16-19 in Ludwigsburg, located in the heart of the state of Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.
