The Aviator Flies High on DVD
THE AVIATOR, Martin Scorseses celebrated Howard Hughes biopic, lands on DVD in an impressive two-disc set on May 24, 2005 (Warner Home Video, $29.95). The intersection of Hollywood and aviation starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn and a host of other memorable supporting roles, boasts stunning visuals that digitally duplicate the two and three-strip Technicolor look of the period, as well as dramatic and seamless vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks, CafeFX and Entity FX, supervised by Rob Legato and prevised under the supervision of Oliver Hotz.
The second disc boasts nearly three hours of bonus features, including commentary by Scorsese about his own take on legend of Hughes and memories of viewing his movies, and more detailed analysis by Oscar-winning editor Thelma Schoonmaker. There is also a featurette about the making of the vfx (especially the XF-11 crash in Beverly Hills).
