Alice Pulls Off Three-peat at Box Office
For the third straight weekend, Tim Burton's ALICE IN WONDERLAND has topped the weekend box office. For the weekend of March 19-21, ALICE (vfx by Café FX, Matte World Digital, Nvizage, Sony Pictures Imageworks, and Svengali Visual Effects) grew another $34.5 million, lifting its cume to $265.8 million.
Fox's DIARY OF A WIMPY KID, which was directed by former vfx artist Thor Freudenthal, debuted at #2 with $21.8 million. Debut films, THE BOUNTY HUNTER and REPO MEN (with vfx by Mr. X and Rodeo FX), followed right behind with $21 million and $6.15 million, respectively.
Paramount's comedy SHE'S OUT OF MY LEAGUE fell from third to fifth with $6.01 million, making its two-week cume $20 million. GREEN ZONE, with vfx by Double Negative and Lip Sync Post, tumbled to sixth, earning another $5.96 million, which brought its total tally to $24.7 million.
Martin Scorsese's SHUTTER ISLAND conjured up an additional $4.76 million. The mind-bending thriller, with vfx from Crazy Horse Effects, Gentle Giant Studios, Mark Rappaport Creature Effects and New Deal Studios, has earned $115.8 million.
AVATAR drops a single slot to eighth, corralling another $4 million, raising its all-time leading box office cume to $736.9 million.
Rounding out the top ten were Fox Searchlight's OUR FAMILY WEDDING at #9 with $3.8 million and a $13.7 million cume, and Summit's REMEMBER ME at #10 with $3.3 million and a $13.9 million cume.
