In a surprise addition to an already powerful roster of speakers lined up for the VIEW Conference, October 25 to 28, overall visual effects supervisor ERIK NASH from DIGITAL DOMAIN has chosen to give the world’s first presentation of that studio’s work at VIEW Conference. ERIK NASH will be spotlighting the state-of-the-art filmmaking techniques used to create the high-tech robotic boxers for DreamWorks Studios’ breakthrough picture, REAL STEEL. Real Steel opened October 7 in the USA.
Variety's critic Peter DeBruge writes of the film: “The uncanny thing about Real Steel is just how gripping the fight scenes are. . . .Seamless visual effects and heavy-duty sound design complete the illusion of fast-moving fighting machines.” To make this possible, Digital Domain, Giant Studios, and Glenn Derry’s Video Hawks collaborated to push beyond the techniques used for Avatar into a new state-of-the-art filmmaking process. A virtual production workflow designed by Digital Domain and Nash allowed director Shawn Levy to see CG characters as if they were actually present on set - in the boxing rings where background plates were shot - just as he would shoot any other scene with human actors.“We are thrilled that Erik Nash will share these important techniques with our attendees at the VIEW conference,” says conference director Maria Elena Gutierrez. “It is exciting to watch computer graphics characters move from post production up the pipeline and into production.”
Now in its 12th year, the VIEW is Italy’s largest computer graphics conference. Keynoting the conference this year are Pixar Animation Studio’s Sharon Calahan, director of photography on Disney/Pixar’s Cars2; Skywalker Sound director of sound design Randy Thom, a two-time Academy Award winner who created the sound design for Rio; Tom Wujec, Autodesk fellow and author of three books on innovation; and Cory Doctorow, technology activist, science fiction author, and journalist. VIEW is also bringing to Turin visual effects supervisors and artists, game developers, automotive technology inventors, scientists involved in medical imaging, and many others.
Founded in 1993 by director James Cameron and two business partners, Digital Domain has produced visual effects for more than 80 movies including Titanic, Apollo 13, the Transformers trilogy and TRON: Legacy, and Digital Domain artists have earned multiple Academy Awards. Today, Digital Domain artists in Los Angeles, Vancouver, San Francisco, Florida, Mumbai and London, are working on David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer, Alex Proyas Paradise Lost, and Carl Rinsch’ 47 Ronin.
VIEW 2011 takes place October 25-28 following the film festival VIEWfest, October 21-23 in beautiful Turin, Italy.
