Wayne Stables, visual effects supervisor at Weta Digital for Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin has chosen to give the world’s first presentation of that studio’s work on the film at the VIEW Conference in Turin, Italy.
Tintin, Spielberg’s first computer-animated feature, opens in Italy on October 28. Based on the popular classic comic books created by Belgian artist Herge (Georges Remi), and co-produced by Peter Jackson, the story centers on Tintin, a young explorer, and his faithful dog Snowy. The first installment of a planned trilogy, the film stars Daniel Craig as Red Rackham, Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock, and Jamie Bell as the voice of Tintin. To create the film, Spielberg used performance capture techniques at Weta Digital similar to those used by James Cameron for Avatar. Prior to Tintin, Stables was a visual effects supervisor on Avatar, and lead technical director on the Lord of the Rings trilogies.
“We are so excited that our attendees will be the first in the world to see a presentation by Wayne Stables on the techniques used by the artists at Weta Digital to create this break-through film,” says Maria Elena Gutierrez, VIEW Conference director. Now in its 12th year, the VIEW is Italy’s largest computer graphics conference. VIEW 2011 takes place October 25-28 following the digital movie festival VIEWFest, October 21-23 in beautiful Turin, Italy.
Keynoting the VIEW Conference are Pixar Animation Studio’s Sharon Calahan, director of photography on Disney/Pixar’s Cars 2; Skywalker Sound director of sound design Randy Thom, a two-time Academy Award winner who created the sound design for Rio; Tom Wujec, Autodesk fellow and author of many books on innovation; and Cory Doctorow, technology activist, science fiction author, and journalist. Calahan, Thom, and Wujec, and Pixar’s story artist Enrico Casarosa and shader writer Davide Pesare are also offering workshops at the conference.
VIEW is also bringing to Turin, visual effects supervisors and artists who worked on the films likely to be nominated for 2012 Oscars, game developers, automotive technology inventors, scientists involved in medical imaging, and many others.
