Action On Film International Film Festival Screens Over 500 Films
by Mo Whelan
I recently was introduced to Action On Film International Film Festival located in Pasadena by my friend, Alex Ballar. His live-action, comedy, feature film Zombie Drugs was nominated for three awards and won Best Art Direction – Feature. One of the animation community’s favorite independent animators, Bill Plympton, won the AOF 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award. Both winners spiked my interest in the film festival.
Action On Film (AOF) is an annual film festival that ran from July 22-30th 2011. It consisted of screenings for over 500 short and feature length films, a few reasonably priced seminars, various brunches and dinners where you could meet individual filmmakers. There were also nightly after parties where people could relax and mingle after a long day at the festival. The main check-in location was at the Regency’s Academy Theaters, however, the event locations were scattered throughout Pasadena.
A few additional award winners include the short film Fluffle, directed by Stephanie Franz, for Best Animation and Suppernumerary, directed by J S Mayank, for Best Visual Effects Short. Some of the event sponsors included; AVID, Boris FX, Video Symphony, Withoutabox, InkTip, ProductionHub, T. Boyle’s Tavern, The Sheraton in Pasadena and several other companies.
