North America's Biggest And Best
Animation Festival
Is Coming October 2-6!

Welcome! The Ottawa International Animation Festival is North America's premiere competitive animation festival and the 2nd largest animation event in the world. The next edition will take place from October 2 to 6, 2002, at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Canada. OIAF 02 will treat both the international animation community and public audiences to a five-day feast of the best new animated short and feature-length films and videos from around the world. It also connects recruiters, distributors and producers to a wealth of new talent and cutting edge films. Along with its highly regarded international competition, OIAF 02 will also feature numerous retrospectives, a trade fair and industry market, children's programs, professional development workshops, an Animator's Picnic, parties and dozens of other special events.

 
Official Competition Any frame by frame or computer assisted animated film or video made for cinema or television may be entered. Competition categories include: Narrative Short Films under 40 minutes, Non-Narrative Short Films under 40 minutes, First Film, Films Made for Children, Educational Film, Advertising Film, Station Identification, Music Videos, Television Specials, Television Series, Animation for the Internet and for the first time: Animated Feature Film.

Entry Deadline This year's deadline for entries in the International Competition is July 1st, 2002. Please check our website: www.awn.com/ottawa for the OIAF 02 Entry Form, Official Regulations, and other details.

Special Screenings This year's screenings include retrospectives of the work of independent animators Piotr Dumala (Poland), Taku Furukawa (Japan), and cameraless animator Harry Smith (USA). The festival is also proud to present the collected works of two cult animators; John Kricfalusi (Ren and Stimpy, Ripping Friends) and Peter Chung (Aeon Flux), as well as a look at independent studio Buzzco Animation (USA) and influential ad artist R.O. Blechman. Several thematic screenings will also be presented: an in-depth look at the short-lived 1950's series, The Gerald McBoing Boing Show, the first fully animated tv show, and a unique presentation of the Unsung Heroes of Animation; where the work of innovative but overlooked animators Jonathan Amitay (Canada), Janie Geiser (U.S.A), Stephanie Maxwell (U.S.A) and Stephen Woloshen (Canada) will be showcased.

Workshops We are pleased to offer a wide range of specialized workshops covering both industry related topics and creative processes. Tentative workshops include: Preparing a Portfolio, New Tools of the Trade, Pitching Workshop and Session, Co-Productions: Ani-Legal, Channels of Distribution:The Business of Feature Animation, The State of Television Animation, and a look into the animation techniques of Piotr Dumala.
