The Bear

Whilst visiting the zoo, a young girl, Tilly, knocks her beloved Teddy Bear into the Polar Bear's pit. That night The Bear climbs in through her bedroom window and returns it. They make friends and he stays. The next day, whilst her parents are out, Tilly and The Bear cause havoc around the house. That night (still not noticed by Mum and Dad) they snuggle up together again. It starts to snow and The Bear is reminded of his Arctic home. He leaves taking Tilly with him. In searching for his way, he summons The Great Bear, Ursa Major, who leaps from the sky. The three make a journey through London, after which, The Great Bear shows The Polar Bear the direction home, and then leaping across the city he returns Tilly to her bed.

One was that, after one last film, he would be closing down the company to enjoy a well-deserved rest (and he has indeed closed the company, though he's not showed much sign of slowing down as yet!). The second was that he had acquired an option on Raymond Briggs' The Bear -- and he brought me a copy of the book. It was an exquisite tale of a bear...
