Halacy To Head Vivendi Universal Games HR

Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) has appointed Mark J. Halacy to evp, Global Human Resources, overseeing the company's global HR operations across North America, Europe and Asia.

"Mark has led many successful HR development initiatives across large-scale, global organizations," said Bruce Hack, ceo of VU Games, to whom Halacy will report. "He will play an important leadership role at VU Games, as we aim to strengthen our global practices and capabilities."

Former Pixar CFO Joins CME Board

Pixar's former cfo Ann Mather, who recently stepped down from that post, has joined the board of directors of European broadcast group, Central European Media Enterprises (CME), reported VARIETY. Mather will be a non-exec director on the audit and compensation committees. Prior Pixar, she served as evp/cfo for Village Roadshow Pictures. Prior to that, she was a svp of finance at Disney. CME owns television stations in Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia and the Ukraine.

ADV Releases Anime & Manga Titles, Roddenberry's Andromeda on April 20

ADV Films and ADV Manga will be releasing five new manga and four new anime titles as well as the third season of GENE RODDENBERRY'S ANDROMEDA on April 20, 2004. ADV Film's anime DVDs will include AURA BATTLER DUNBINE, KNIGHTS OF THE ZODIAC, MAGICAL SHOPPING ARCADE ABENOBASHI and WEDDING PEACH. Taylor Climbs Production Ladder at Buena Vista Motion Pictures

Brigham Taylor has been promoted to svp of production, Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group, responsible for finding, developing, and overseeing the production of films under the Walt Disney and Touchstone Pictures banners.

"Brigham is a tremendous asset to our team," said Nina Jacobson, president of Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group, to whom he will continue report. "He knows good material when he sees it, and he's great with people. His contribution over the last year has been invaluable to the studio, the filmmakers and me."

Rodriguez's Resignation from DGA Throws 'Mars' Out of Orbit

Robert Rodriguez's recently resignation from the DGA has thrown a wrench into Paramount's development of sci-fi epic, A PRINCESS OF MARS, which was to be Rodriguez follow-up to his current project SIN CITY, reports VARIETY. Because Paramount is a DGA signatory thus required to employ only guild directors. Rodriguez resigned from the guild so he could sidestep co-directing rules on SIN CITY, which will be co-directed by the graphic novel's creator Frank Miller and guest directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Stuttgart Announces Winners

The 12th Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film 2004 (April 1-6, 2004) has broken the attendance record of the last festival with more than 40,000 attendees. The closing events were completely sold out. 500 films were screened at four venues over the six days. Adding to its international acclaim, TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE took home the feature prize.

The winners were:

TOKYOPOP & Disney Expand Cine-Manga Lineup

TOKYOPOP Inc. and Disney Publishing Worldwide are teaming on a new line of Cine-Manga books. The first new Disney Cine-Manga title, LILO & STITCH, is set to debut in stores April 2004, with versions of THAT'S SO RAVEN, PRINCESS DIARIES 2, THE INCREDIBLES and THE LIZZIE MCGUIRE MOVIE set to roll out throughout the year. In total, there will be more than 24 Disney Cine-Manga projects slated for release over the next three years.

Gnomon School of Visual Effects will present an evening with legendary stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen on April 20, 2004 at 7:00 pm. Harryhausen will speak about his work (including the recently restored MOTHER GOOSE STORIES) and life and sign copies of his newly released book, RAY HARRYHAUSEN: AN ANIMATED LIFE (Billboard Books), which will be available for sale at the event.

Cooper Owen To Auction Mickey Mouse Sketches

Cooper Owen is hosting an "At the Movies" auction, which will feature two original staff artist drawings of Mickey Mouse. The sketches from the Walt Disney Studios show multiple Mickey Mouse drawings running away from the viewer. Each sketch measures approximately 12x10 inches (30x25 cm). The starting bid will range between £150-200.

Gaming Surgeons Have Steadier Hands

Seek a surgeon that likes to play videogames and odds are the doctor is less likely to make a mistake. The Associated Press reports that in a recent study, researchers found that doctors who spend at least three hours a week playing videogames made about 37% fewer mistakes in laparoscopic surgery and performed the tasks 27% faster than their counterparts who did not play videogames.
