Realscan 3D Gives Bite to Disney's Underdog

Realscan 3D, an industry leader in high resolution, high color structured light 3D scanning, announced its involvement on the forthcoming Disney film UNDERDOG (Aug. 3, 2007). Realscan 3D provided the production with animation-ready precision digital doubles of the lead character, Shoeshine, Underdog's alter-ego, and the heads and muzzles of the cast dogs in the film. Realscan also created a digital double of the film's villain, Simon Barsinister, played by Peter Dinklage.

Superman Flies High in Big Screen Return

Warner Bros. SUPERMAN RETURNS opened softer than expected but still posted solid Independence numbers in its five-day theatrical bow for the period ended July 2, 2006. Bolstered by vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks, Rhythm & Hues, Framestore CFC, Rising Sun Pictures, The Orphanage, Frantic Films, among others, the Bryan Singer reboot scored an estimated $84.7M on around 8,200 screens at 4,065 theaters. For the weekend, it earned around $52.6M, which puts it below last years WAR OF THE WORLDS Independence Day start ($64.9M) but ahead of BATMAN BEGINS ($48.7M).

Jobs Won’t Take Pay at Disney

The Walt Disney Co. has amended its compensation policy for non-employee directors after Apple Computer Inc. ceo Steve Jobs requested not to be paid for serving on Disney's board, according to several news reports.

Jobs, previously Pixar Animation Studio's chairman/ceo, joined the board after Disney purchased Pixar in May for $7.4 billion in stock. Jobs receives $1 a year for his role as Apple Computer's ceo.

Dragonlance Movie Stay Close to Book

Cindi Rice, co-exec producer of the upcoming animated fantasy film, DRAGONS OF AUTUMN TWILIGHT, said the film will remain true to the book by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, the first in their Dragonlance Chronicles series, reports SCI FI WIRE.

"I'm extremely proud of the creative team I brought together," Rice said. "George Strayton has written a very cool script while staying true to Margaret's and Tracy's vision. Will Meugniot is simply an animation genius, and he's helping us create a very innovative and complex film. It is a joy to work with both of them."

The Walt Disney Co. has launched the "Disney College Program" for 2006, reports MickeyNews.com. The program offers college students the opportunity from any academic discipline to experience working for Disney in a wide variety of roles available in the company. The program gives students a chance to work in a corporate environment, where students perform their tasks in one of the four theme parks, two water parks, resorts in dining, retail or entertainment. Students will have the opportunity to interact with the guests and develop a solid foundation working with people.

Edinburgh-based Strange Co. have released the first part of BLOODSPELL, a computer-animated feature film. Using computer games technology and machinima, a new way of making animated films, the studio was able to complete the film in under three years, with a mostly volunteer staff and a budget of less than 5,000 pounds.

Coinciding with Warner Bros' release of SUPERMAN RETURNS, ReelTime has made SUPERMAN, THE LOST EPISODES available for viewing at no cost. Plus, every time the series is watched, ReelTime will make a donation to the Christopher Reeve Foundation (CRF).

This collection of wartime-era SUPERMAN classic cartoons, produced by Famous Studios, never made it to the television screen in the 1940s. They were the first, most lavishly produced, as well as the most faithful to the printed comics. There is also a bonus MIGHTY MOUSE cartoon at the end.

The premiere of Spike TV's first original scripted action-adventure offering BLADE: THE SERIES on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, drew record ratings for the network with a 2.0 HH rating and 2.5 million viewers, the highest premiere in network history for an original series. TELETOON Dives In With Adult Swim

Starting September 2006, as part of the specialty network's new fall season, The Detour on TELETOON will present Cartoon Network's Adult Swim lineup. The recent acquisition deal gives the network's post-9:00 pm block for more mature viewers scheduling rights to six new properties, and new episodes to three already well-established titles on the network.
