Weinsteins Draw Swords With Live-Action Mulan

The Weinstein Co. is in final talks on a three-picture deal with MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA star Ziyi Zhang, which includes a live-action version of MULAN, VARIETY reports. The second film in the deal would be a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 classic, THE SEVEN SAMURAI.

The MULAN film would be co-produced by by Chinese multi-millionaire David Dongs new Meridian Pictures firm. CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON scribe Wang Hui-ling has penned the script. Based on a Chinese folk tale, a female resistance fighter disguises herself as her father to take his place in battle. The $20 million Chinese-language film is set to start production in February.
