WATCH: Warner Bros. Unveils New Trailer for ‘The Iron Giant’

More than 15 years after Brad Bird’s animated classic first arrived in theaters, ‘The Iron Giant’ has been retooled in a Signature Edition complete with two newly-added scenes.

It has been more than 15 years since Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant landed in theaters. Now, the adventures of the hulking, misunderstood robot has been retooled in a “Signature Edition,” featuring completed versions of two previously abandoned scenes.

Winner of nine Annie Awards, including Best Animated Feature, The Iron Giant is the tale of an unlikely friendship between a rebellious boy named Hogarth (voiced by Eli Marienthal) and a giant robot, voiced by the then virtually unknown Vin Diesel. The voice cast also included Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick Jr., James Gammon, Cloris Leachman, Christopher McDonald and John Mahoney.

The revamped film will be released in theaters for a limited engagement through Fathom Events on Wednesday, September 30 at 7:00 PM (local time), with encore showings at 12:00 PM on October 4. Tickets are on sale now, with The Iron Giant: Signature Edition available on digital platforms, including iTunes, this fall.

For comparison’s sake, here’s the original theatrical trailer from 1999:

The feature directorial debut of Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Tomorrowland), the film was produced by Allison Abbate and Des McAnuff from a screenplay written by Tim McCanlies. Employing both traditional and computer animation, the movie was adapted from poet Ted Hughes’ book, “The Iron Man.”

Although the film was well received by critics when it was first released by Warner Bros. in August 1999, The Iron Giant got off to a rocky start with a disappointing theatrical run, taking in a mere $5.7 million for its opening weekend. Budgeted at $70 million, the film went on to earn $23.2 million domestically and $31.3 million worldwide. Since then, The Iron Giant has cultivated a passionate following, becoming an animated classic.
