Columbia Pictures has hired FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS feature helmer Peter Berg to direct TONIGHT, HE COMES, the 10-years in the making superhero flick starring Will Smith, reports VARIETY. Previously, Jonathan Mostow and Gabriele Muccino were set to helm the picture, but left the project over creative differences.

The schedule sees lensing start in May for a summer 2008 release.

Vincent Ngo penned the original script, but many rewrites from Vince Gilligan followed. The tale chronicles an egotistical superhero, who has lost the passion for do-gooding as well as the support of the citizens, as he falls for a married housewife.

Charlize Theron is rumored to be the leading choice for the housewife character.

Akiva Goldsman, Michael Mann, James Lassiter and Smith will produce.
