Warner Bros. announced Monday they will release TERMINATOR SALVATION: THE FUTURE BEGINS on Memorial Day weekend 2009, according to VARIETY.

Christian Bale stars as John Connor in the first of a three-picture arc that begins after Skynet has destroyed almost all humans in a nuclear holocaust. Connor leads a group of survivors to stop the machines.

Summer 2009 is still relatively open, but Twentieth Century Fox also has NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM II: ESCAPE FROM THE SMITHSONIAN opening May 22.

Halcyon Co. gave Warner the deal to distribute TERMINATOR, or T4, in North America.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group got the international distribution rights for all territories excluding Korea and select Middle Eastern markets for TERMINATOR on Monday as well.

Halcyon acquired all TERMINATOR franchise rights in May 2007, and recently secured all first-look rights to the works of Philip K. Dick, a noted science-fiction writer, VARIETY reports.

TERMINATOR is directed by McG (CHARLIE'S ANGELS) from a script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris. Ferris wrote 2003's TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES.

The production will likely begin this spring in New Mexico, and is produced by Moritz Borman, Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek.

Sam Worthington is reportedly in talks to star alongside Bale.
