Steven Spielberg will next direct an updated big screen version of Mary Chase's Pulitzer Prize winning play, HARVEY, a co-production between Twentieth Century Fox and DreamWorks, reports The BBC News and HuffingtonPost.com.

"I am very happy to be working again with my friend Tom Rothman who shepherded us through MINORITY REPORT," said Spielberg.

HARVEY weaves the tale of eccentric, Elwood P. Dowd, and his relationship with a tall invisible rabbit and how this impacts both friends and family. HARVEY, the stage play, won the Pulitzer in 1944 and was brought to the screen in 1950 (Universal) starring iconic everyman, Jimmy Stewart.

HARVEY will be penned by best-selling novelist turned screenwriter Jonathan Tropper. Fox 2000 acquired the rights to the original play in 2008. Casting and pre-production will begin now, with cameras set to roll in Jan 2010, said the official joint studio announcement made today.
