The Shadow Illustrator Edward Cartier Dies

Artist Edward D. Cartier, whose illustrations appeared in THE SHADOW and numerous other science fiction and mystery publications, has died in New Jersey at the age of 94, according to the ASSOCIATED PRESS (via VARIETY).

Cartier died December 25 at his home in Ramsey, New Jersey, according to his son, Dean Cartier, after suffering from Parkinson's disease for several years.

Best known for the hundreds of illustrations he did for THE SHADOW in the 1930s and 40s, Cartier's artwork also appeared in works by authors like Robert A. Heinlein and Isaac Asimov, as well numerous other science fiction magazines. He was the premier artist for the Fantasy Press and Gnome Press book publishing houses in the 1950s. By author Walter B. Gibson, THE SHADOW novels appeared in pulp magazines and followed the exploits of a mysterious crime fighter who always wore black.
