Upon the success of UNDERWORLD in its opening weekend at the box office, Lakeshore Entertainment and Screen Gems have quickly greenlit two additional UNDERWORLD films. Original film’s writers Danny McBride and Len Wiseman will begin writing the sequel’s screenplay immediately. Wiseman plans to return as director as well, hoping to start filming as soon as possible. The third film is tentatively set as a prequel to the first film. Kate Beckinsale, who played the UNDERWORLD heroine, has not signed on yet, but she has voiced interest in taking on the role for a second run.

The original film was inspired by ROMEO AND JULIET, replacing the Montagues and Capulets with vampires and werewolves. The horror pic took home $21.8 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. Wiseman, a former production designer, sold the script to Lakeshore, which then struck up a co-production deal with Screen Gems.
