Rio Fights Off New Competition to Stay at #1

Fox and Blue Sky's RIO flew back to the #1 spot at the U.S. box office for the weekend of April 22-24, 2011. The Brazilian-themed bird flick added $26.8 million to its $81.3 million two-week cume.

Lionsgate's TYLER PERRY'S MADEA'S BIG HAPPY FAMILY debuted in second with $25.8 million.

Fox's WATER FOR ELEPHANTS romanced third in its first week, bringing in $17.5 million. The Depression-era drama has vfx from Crazy Horse Effects, Proof, Shade VFX and With A Twist Studio.

Universal's HOP slipped from third to fourth, earning another $12.5 million. With vfx from Rhythm & Hues, the Easter Bunny flick has now nested $100.5 million.

Dimension Films' SCREAM 4 stabbed $7.15 million in fifth. With vfx from Prime Focus and Rez-Illusion, the horror franchise flick has a box office body count of $31.2 million.

Buena Vista's nature doc AFRICAN CATS purred in sixth, raising $6.4 million.

TriStar's SOUL SURFER rode into seventh with $5.6 million. With vfx from Engine Room, the true-life shark attack drama has a cume of $28.7 million.

FilmDistrict's INSIDIOUS haunted the eighth spot with an additional $5.38 million. With vfx from Fractured FX, the horror flick has rounded up $44.2 million to date.

Focus Feature's HANNA tumbled from fourth to ninth, scoring another $5.28 million. With vfx from Exozet Effects, Mr. X and Snow Business, the teen assassin tale lifted its cume to $31.7 million.

Summit Ent.'s SOURCE CODE closed out the top ten with $5.06 million. With vfx from Modus Fx, Moving Picture Company (MPC), Oblique FX and Rodeo FX, the sci-fi thriller has total box office receipts totaling $44.7 million.
