Real Steel Retains Box Office Title

Disney's REAL STEEL retained its U.S. box office title after knocking out all newcomers over the weekend of Oct. 14-16, 2011. With vfx from Digital Domain, Giant Studios and Legacy Effects, the robot family film took home another $16.3 million to date.

Paramount's FOOTLOOSE danced into second with $16.1 million. Wildfire Visual Effects provided visual effects for the remake.

Universal's THE THING scared up $8.7 million in third. The prequel has vfx from Acme F/X, Amalgamated Dynamics, Image Engine Design, Mr. X, Proof and With A Twist Studio.

Sony's THE IDES OF MARCH was elected to fourth place by moviegoers, giving the political thriller another $7.5 million. With vfx from Method Studios and Tyrrell FX & Rentals, the cynical look at modern politics has a cume of $22.2 million.

Warner Bros.' DOLPHIN TALE dove into fifth with $6.35 million. The inspirational family film has amassed $58.7 million to date.

Sony's MONEYBALL slid into sixth, earning $5.5 million. With vfx from Rhythm and Hues, the baseball biz movie has brought in $57.7 million thus far.

Summit's 50/50 slipped from fifth to seventh with $4.32 million. With vfx from Wildfire Visual Effects, the cancer dramedy has raised $24.3 million in total.

TriStar's COURAGEOUS rescued $3.4 million in eighth. The faith-based feature has brought in $21.4 million.

Fox's THE BIG YEAR had a terrible opening weekend, placing ninth with $3.33 million. Factory VFX and Moving Picture Company (MPC) provided visual effects for the bird watching comedy.

THE LION KING rounded out the top ten, earning another $2.71 million. In 3-D alone, the animated classic has earned $90.5 million.
