A Passionate Resurrection at the Box Office

In its seventh week in release, Mel Gibson's THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST jumped back to number one with $15.2M, thanks to the Easter holiday weekend ended April 11, 2004. So far, the biblical epic (with vfx by Keith Vanderlaan's Captive Audience) has racked up a phenomenal $353M to place eighth on the all-time list. Sony/Revolution's HELLBOY (with vfx by The Orphanage, Tippett Studio, Eden FX, HimAnI Prods., among others), last week's number one grosser, dropped 53% in its second outing, drawing $10.8M for $40.8M to date. Debuting in third place was Fox Searchlight's JOHNSON FAMILY VACATION, earning $9.3M. Disney's THE ALAMO (with vfx by Matte World Digital) faired poorly in its debut with $9.1M. MGM's WALKING TALL remake drew only $8.4M in its second week for nearly $29M. Disney's animated HOME ON THE RANGE failed to connect in its sophomore outing, attracting $8.1M in six place and a cume of $27.4M. Coming in at number seven was Warner Bros.' SCOOBY-DOO 2: MONSTERS UNLEASHED (with vfx by Rhythm & Hues and Giant Killer Robots), collecting $8M for a total of $62.8M. Warner Bros.' THE WHOLE TEN YARDS debuted in eighth with $6.6M. Miramax's ELLA ENCHANTED (with vfx by The Moving Picture Co., Cinesite (Europe) and Double Negative, among others) bowed at number nine with $6.1M.
