Hossein Amini (THE WINGS OF THE DOVE) has been hired to adapt THE SUBTLE KNIFE, the second book in Phillip Pullman's HIS DARK MATERIALS series, according to VARIETY. Chris Weitz is in production on the $150 million adaptation of the first book, THE GOLDEN COMPASS, which is set to hit theaters in time for the holidays.

In COMPASS, 12-year-old Lyra Belacqua is transported to a parallel universe to save her best friend from dark forces. In KNIFE, Belacqua meets a 12-year-old boy, who obtains a knife that allows him to cut holes into parallel worlds, and helps him find his missing father.

Newcomer Dakota Blue Richards stars along with Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and Eva Green.

Scholastic Media's Debra Forte is producing COMPASS with line producer Bill Carraro.
