Just how difficult is it to produce, distribute and market an independent animated feature? J. Paul Peszko provides a few answers with the promising Hoodwinked: The True Story of Red Riding Hood, the first independently produced 3D animated feature from the Philippines that screens at Cannes this weekend as a work-in-progress.

Meanwhile, Van Helsing kicked off the summer movie season last weekend with decent, if not spectacular, box office numbers, upping the stakes for imaginative and scary CG monsters. Ellen Wolfe reveals how ILM reimagined Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man. Talk about animation converging with live action.

Speaking of convergence, E3 is in full swing this week in Los Angeles, revealing how games and movies are converging more and more. So there’s plenty of gaming news to catch up with too.
