The vfx bake-off is tonight at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as the Visual Effects Award Nominating Committee narrows the list of seven contenders down to three nominees, among them THE AVIATOR, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN, I ROBOT, LEMONY SNICKET’S SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW and SPIDER-MAN 2.

Jill Smolin, VFXWORLD’s own Pixel Priestess, will provide a full report Friday on the 15-minute clip reels and presentations, and next Tuesday we’ll tell you who the lucky three are when the Academy announces the full list of Oscar nominees.
