Denzel Washington is in negotiations to star in Tony Scott's UNSTOPPABLE drama, per VARIETY, about a runaway train carrying a cargo of toxic chemicals.

The 20th Century Fox production was written by Mark Bomback, and is loosely based on a real event. Washington would play an experienced engineer who must board the train with a young conductor to chase the train down.

Scott and Julie Yorn are set to produce. Scott and Washington have previously worked on CRIMSON TIDE, MAN ON FIRE, DEJA VU and the upcoming THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3, coming June 12 from Columbia.

The actor has been filming Alcon Ent./Silver Pictures' THE BOOK OF ELI for Warner Bros.
