Cowboys & Aliens Takes Box Office Win from Smurfs

With the final numbers coming in, Universal's COWBOYS AND ALIENS was declared the winner of the U.S. box office for the weekend of July 29-31, 2011. Jon Favreau's genre mash-up earned $36.43 million, edging out THE SMURFS, which took in $35.61 million. Original estimates had the films tied at $36.2 million.

The champ has vfx from Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Creature Effects, Halon Ent., Kerner Optical, Legacy Effects, Lidar Guys, Lightwave International and Shade VFX.

The comicstrip to live-action/CG hybrid adaptation has vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI), Framestore, Lola Visual Effects, Tippett Studio, Drac Studios, Illusion Industries, The Base Studio and The Third Floor.
