Caligari announced the release of gameSpace Light (gSL), a special edition of the company's game graphics authoring software. gameSpace Light is designed to introduce independent game developers, students and hobbyists to 3D game content creation using Caligari's trademark first-person-perspective design interface.

Available immediately for free download, gSL enables users to model, texture, render and animate game characters and objects. gSL allows the import and export of objects to gameSpace and .X formats. Users will also have access to free tutorials, online support, forums as well as an online community.

"We believe that the amateur and independent game market is rapidly expanding," said Roman Ormandy, founder/president of Caligari. "We continue to focus on making powerful and affordable 3D content creation tools even more accessible to aspiring developers looking to break into this industry. In sharp contrast to competitive "starter" products, gameSpace exports to open, usable formats and is a great solution for quickly creating game concepts or prototypes without a lot of hassle or a steep learning curve."

In addition, Caligari has also announced the gameSpace Summer Shootout -- a game developer's talent competition featuring more than $10,000 in prizes.

Caligari Corp. was founded in 1986 and has remained at the forefront of 3D authoring for the Web age. The company's award-winning flagship product, trueSpace, is a 3D modeling and animation program used by product designers, Web designers, illustrators and animators worldwide. The company maintains headquarters at 1959 Landings Drive, Mountain View, California, 94043.
