Veteran actor Pat Hingle, best known as Commissioner James Gordon in the first four BATMAN films, died in North Carolina Saturday night at the age of 84, according to news reports. A spokeswoman for the family, cousin Lynn Heritage, said Hingle died of myelodysplasia, a type of blood cancer, at his home in Carolina Beach, North Carolina (per the LOS ANGELES TIMES).

A stage, television and film actor, Hingle was one of two actors to appear in all four early BATMAN films, along with Michael Gough, who played Alfred Pennyworth. With various men playing Batman, villains and love interests, Hingle played the commissioner in BATMAN (1989), BATMAN RETURNS (1992), BATMAN FOREVER (1995) and BATMAN & ROBIN (1997).

His television credits included TWILIGHT ZONE, THE UNTOUCHABLES, ROUTE 66, GUNSMOKE, THE FUGITIVE and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE.

Hingle is survived by his wife Julia, five children, 11 grandchildren and two sisters.
