AJA Touts Ki Pro in L.A.
AJA Video is half-way through a global tour to show off its award-winning Ki Pro portable device that bridges the gap between production and post. The Grass Valley, California-based manufacturer (which will soon have a new 70,000 square foot facility) was in L.A. yesterday at Gnomon and met with media on Tuesday.
"It's everything AJA has done in one box," suggests AJA President Nick Rashby. "It's a new way of thinking about post."
Ki Pro, which was introduced at NAB 2009, garnering five show awards, records files to the Apple ProRes 422 codec directly from camera and provides a new way of connecting production and post with its extensive analog and digital connectivity, delivering media that is immediately available to edit within Apple’s Final Cut Studio.
Ki Pro allows filmmakers, broadcasters and video professionals to skip the process of re-rendering to an editing codec by giving immediate access to edit-ready files directly from camera. The device is a small, portable unit that can sit on a table, in a bay or mounted between a camera and tripod. Ki Pro is also ideal for on-set monitoring, providing instant access to multiple display devices simultaneously. It is still on target to begin shipping this month.
"It exists because we saw a gap between production and post," Rashby adds. "Recording media influences product. Luckily, we wanted to work with a compression scheme that was efficient. In addition, you could have a wide range of connectivity."
Product Manager Jon Thorn adds that there's been interest in the Ki Pro within the vfx industry, including previs pros.
