Seven films that will compete in the Oscar visual effects bakeoff were announced by the Motion Picture Academy on Wednesday,  according to VARIETY.

AVATAR, DISTRICT 9, HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE, STAR TREK, TERMINATOR SALVATION, TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, and 2012 all made the cut.

VARIETY added that there were some notable omissions: WATCHMEN, G-FORCE, and G.I. JOE.

The bakeoff is being held Jan. 21 at the Academy's Goldwyn Theater. The final three nominees will be announced Feb. 2 in the full Oscar nominations wrap-up.
