Viola & King's Shirts Top Nordic Fest

On Sunday, May 7, 2000 in Fredrikstad, Norway, the Nordic and Baltic Animation Festival Fredrikstad called to an end its five-day festival. The Oscar award nominated MY GRANDMOTHER IRONED THE KING'S SHIRTS took home two awards at the festival. The jury consisted of Marjut Rimminen (Finland/U.K.), Konstantin Bronzit (Russia), Sven Påhlsson (Norway), Richard R. Reeves (Canada) and Cory Wynne (U.S.A.). The festivals focus is to promote the screening and better understanding of animation. The festival presented: Nordic and Baltic films in competition, Nordic and Baltic Panorama, International highlights, a focus on Canadian animation, a celebration of Oskar Fischinger, jury programs and exhibitions. Oscar-award nominee Paul Driessen was the guest of honor. Below is a complete list of the award winners.

Best Film Grand Prix

VIOLA by Priit Tender.

Jury statement: The Grand Prix winner is an elegant and magical film that emerges as a prime example of the unique power of animation in expressing diverse themes of tragedy and love.

Honorable Mention Best Film Category MY GRANDMOTHER IRONED THE KING'S SHIRTS by Torill Kove.

Jury statement: The honorable mention is given for this film's precise and sincere interpretation of presenting Norways recent past.

Best Student Film

ROMANSS by Kaspar Jancis at the Turku Polytechnicarts and Media.

Jury statement: For its mature and poetic exploration of surreal themes while superbly applying a modern style to familiar imagery.

Honorable Mentions Best Student Film Category NAVEL POINT by Kim Helminen, Tatu Pohjavarta and Mark Ståhle at the Turku PolytechnicArts and Media. BUBBLE TROUBLE by Jens Werner Andersen at Høgskolen i Volda.

Best Use of Animation in a Commercial

"Monster" by Jonas Dahlbeck.

Jury statement: The jury's decision for the award for best use of animation in a commercial goes to a film that is a seamless Kung-Fu choreography of a pre-historic predator.

The Special Jury Prize

SNAILS by Pjotr Sapegin.

Jury Statement: This prize is for perfection. The film's direction, well-observed characters and overall plausibility have made this film unique.
