VFX Continues to Dominate Domestic Box Office

The final box office numbers for 2005 are in and, not surprisingly, seven of the top 10 finishers were vfx-intensive blockbusters. Foxs STAR WARS: EPISODE III REVENGE OF THE SITH led the way with $380.2M. Following in second, third and fourth place were Warner Bros. HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE with $278.6M, Paramounts WAR OF THE WORLDS with $234.2M and Buena Vistas THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE with $232.1M. Warner Bros. CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and BATMAN BEGINS finished in the sixth and seventh spots with $206.4M and $205.3M. DreamWorks MADAGASCAR was the leading animated feature at number eight with $193.2M and Universals KING KONG rounded out the top 10 with $180M.

Finishing 13, 14 and 15, meanwhile, were Foxs FANTASTIC FOUR with $154.6M, Disneys first 3D-animated feature, CHICKEN LITTLE, with $132.5M and Fox/Blue Skys animated ROBOTS with $128.2M. The battle of the stop-motion features went to DreamWorks/Aardmans WALLACE AND GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT with $56.1M vs. TIM BURTONS CORPSE BRIDE from Warner Bros. with $53.3M.
