The UK’s Trunk Animation completes a video for “Doom and Gloom,” the new single from the Rolling Stones’ soon-to-be-released album, “Grrr.”
LONDON -- Trunk Animation recently completed animation for a video for “Doom and Gloom,” the new single from the soon-to-be-released album, Grrr, from the Rolling Stones.
Recorded in Paris and produced by long-time Rolling Stones collaborator Dan Was, Grrr is the first album in seven years to be released by the legendary rock band. Record label Polydor wanted a simple lyric video to accompany the song, and to tie the video in with the great new album cover.
Trunk’s Rok Predin and illustrator Sara Savelj created a loose paintbrush-based type for the video using a mix of brush strokes and scanned in marks with real dripping paint footage all mixed together with loads of splatters, drips, and flecks. The new single is full of dystopian lyrics commenting on contemporary issues and driven by a pounding score, and the feel of the video reflects that with the passionate paint splatters and drips that feel like someone is actually there, furiously painting away with the song in the background.
By using black-on-white ground interspersed with color and negative interplays to emphasize phrases and words, the video perfectly reflects the mood of the song. During a musical interlude the iconic Rolling Stones tongue logo makes an appearance, beautifully illustrated by Savelj. The video was created using hand-painted textures and scans intermixed with live action elements and composited together using Adobe After Effects.
Trunk producer Richard Barnett noted, “It was an unbelievable opportunity to work for literally Rock Legends, and on such a great track as well! We were able to turn around the video in an incredibly short time helped enormously by the guys at Polydor, and after Elton John, the projections on the palace for Madness, and now this, it’s been a great year.”
The results of Trunk’s work have been well received by the band, including front man Mick Jagger, who noted he “loved it.”
