On Dec. 3, 2003, the nominations for the 2004 IFP Independent Spirit Awards were announced with the French animated feature TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE taking in a nomination for Best Foreign Film. Bringing home five nods was AMERICAN SPLENDOR, based on the life of independent comic writer Harvey Pekar. The film garnered nominations for Best Feature, Best Director (Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini), Best Screenplay (Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini), Best Male Lead (Paul Giamatti) and Best Supporting Male (Judah Friedlander). As well, TRIPLETS will compete against WHALE RIDER, with its impressive CG underwater whale shots, in the Foreign category.
The award ceremony will take place on Feb. 28, 2004, the day before the Oscars. The awards will air live on IFC at 5:00 pm EST and replay on Bravo at 10:00 pm EST. For more information, visit www.ifp.org.
