Toronto Animated Image Society Announces Second Year of Artist Residency Program

Deadline for submissions to the second year of the Toronto Animated Image Society’s four-month Research and Production Animation Residency program is July 31, 2015.

After a successful first year with Artist-in-Residence Brett Long (who has an Artist Talk on Saturday July 4th ), The Toronto Animated Image Society (TAIS) is seeking applications for Year Two of its new Research and Production Animation Residency supported by The Petman Foundation, with a deadline of July 31, 2015.

This residency will see one selected Canadian artist and one selected International artist engage in self-directed work towards the completion of a new independent animated film or video, supported by a combination of a monetary funding and in-kind studio space and resources at the TAIS Production Centre. Applicants must be TAIS members (of any level) to be eligible; non-members wishing to apply may register for membership on the TAIS website.

The Residency for Canadian Artists will take place from October 1, 2015 to January 31, 2016. The goal for this four-month Canadian Artist Residency is to emerge with a finished work.

The Residency for International Artists will take place from November 1 to November 30, 2015. The goal for this one-month International Artist Residency is to experiment with the resources at the TAIS Production Centre to advance or complete a work.

The artist selected will also engage with the community by giving an artist talk, workshop or presentation as part of his/her activities within the residency.

For this Residency program, it is imperative that the selected artist(s) interact and experiment with TAIS equipment and resources. Proposals that are strictly research or pre-production without any actual production component will not be eligible. Both the Toronto Animated Image Society and The Petman Foundation must be acknowledged as funders in the finished work.

PROGRAM DETAILS

  • The selected Canadian artist will be awarded with $9000, comprised of $3000 in-kind towards 4-months of work studio space and equipment at the TAIS Production Centre (including upgrade to Studio membership if needed) and $6,000 cash funding for the project.
  • The selected International artist will be awarded with $3500, comprised of $1500 in-kind towards 1-month of work studio space and equipment at the TAIS Production Centre (including upgrade to Studio membership if needed) and $2000 cash funding for the project.
  • It is within the rationale of this program that selected artist may be able to contribute with additional funding from other sources.
  • The work must remain in the artistic control of the artist. Projects servicing a third-party producer are not eligible.
  • TAIS will retain a copy of the work for archiving, dissemination and presentation.
  • Production and experimentation during the residency period needs to be done at the TAIS Production Centre in Toronto.
