Thor Hammers Competition at U.S. Box Office

Paramount and Marvel's THOR kicked off the summer movie season, hammering out $66 million in first place. The superhero tale has vfx from BUF, CEG Media, Digital Domain, Fuel VFX, Hirota Paint Industries (HPI), Legacy Effects, Luma Pictures, The Base Studio, The Third Floor and Whiskytree. Though it easily beat out its competition, the first tentpole of the summer earned less than FAST FIVE's $86.2 million opening last weekend.

Speaking of FAST FIVE, the car porn flick finished second, adding $32.5 to its $139.9 million cume. The impressive franchise installment has vfx from BlueBolt, Factory VFX, Method Studios, Moving Picture Company (MPC), Pixomondo, Proof and With A Twist Studio.

TriStar's JUMPING THE BROOM romanced third in its opening weekend. The wedding-themed romcom earned $13.7 million.

Another romcom premiered in fourth. Warner Bros.' SOMETHING BORROWED took in $13.2 million.

Fox and Blue Sky's RIO slipped to fifth with $8.2 million. The Rio-themed animated romance has a cume of $114.9 million.

Fox's WATER FOR ELEPHANTS stomped into sixth, bringing in another $5.6 million. The circus romance has box office receipts totaling $41.6 million.

Lionsgate's TYLER PERRY'S MADEA'S BIG HAPPY FAMILY wound up in seventh with $3.9 million, lifting its cume to $46.8 million.

Buena Vista's PROM dated eighth place, dancing away with $2.43 million. The teen romcom has brought in $7.8 million to date.

TriStar's SOUL SURFER swam away with $2.1 million in ninth. With vfx from Engine Room, the true-life shark attack drama has a cume of $36.7 million.

Rounding out the top ten was Weinstein Co.'s HOODWINKED TOO! HOOD VS. EVIL. With animation from Arc Prods., the animated sequel smuggled another $1.88 million, bringing its cume to $6.71 million.
