Press Release from Nelvana Enterprises

(September 27, 2010 – Toronto, Ontario) – Nelvana Enterprises brings an exciting slate of new shows to MIPCOM this year:

Franklin and Friends, a new CGI series featuring international fan favorite Franklin the turtle, is a Singapore-Canadian co-production from Nelvana and Infinite Frameworks Pte. Ltd.  Franklin is still the undisputed star of the show and filled with passion for Woodland, his family and friends. Franklin isn’t perfect but he is working on it and his daily adventures encourage kids to be curious about the world. Featuring an ensemble of his friends, Bear, Fox, Rabbit, Beaver and Snail, and introducing quirky Aunt T, the stories of Franklin and Friends will feature special themes including fun mysteries, Woodland events and outdoor activities. Franklin celebrates his 25th anniversary in 2011.  26 x half hour episodes (2 x 11 minutes) for kids 4-7.

Mr. Young is a hilarious multi-camera sitcom performed in front of a live audience from acclaimed writer Dan Signer (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,The Suite Life on Deck) and produced by Thunderbird Films in association with Corus Entertainment Inc.’s YTV. The story centers on the life of Adam Young, a child prodigy who went to university at the age of nine. Now, at fourteen, he’s a college graduate and ready to enter the workforce as a high school science teacher. With one foot in the lunch room and one foot in the staff room, Adam will be trapped between two worlds. His co-workers and boss will be more than twice his age. His students will include his best friend, the girl he has a crush on and the class bully. Despite having a world of options, Adam chose a teaching career for a chance to have the normal high school experience. It is set to debut on YTV in Canada in Spring 2011.  26 x half hour episodes for kids 8-12.

Scaredy Squirrel is a 2D animated series based on the hit book series by Mélanie Watt.  It’s the story of a loveable, creative, and nerdy hero... with just a hint of OCD.  He may seem quirky at first, but Scaredy is one confident squirrel.  He is what he is, does what he does, and it's AWESOME!  Produced by Nelvana, the show is scheduled to premiere on YTV in 2011.  26 x half hour episodes (2 x 11 minutes) for kids 6-11.

Nelvana Enterprises will also present the following shows at MIPCOM:  Life with Boys, Mike the Knight, Sidekick, Detentionaire, Babar and the Adventures of Badou, BEYBLADE:  Metal Masters, Bakugan: Mechtanium Surge and Hot Wheels Battle Force 5:  Fused.

What happened to Franklin?? As a mother of four children ages 4-11 we have grown up on Franklin. We have loved everything about the series - the characters, the music, the storylines, and the overall production of each episode. We have tried watching the new "Franklin and Friends" episodes and frankly, we are not a fan. The show has lost it's magic touch. The animation almost leaves us feeling dizzy after we watch the show. So much of the background music we grew accustomed to is gone and the character voices have changed. After trying to watch two episodes, my four year old finally asked if we could turn it off and watch the "Old Franklin". Thankfully we have a DVD collection of Franklin. You seemed to have dismissed the "magic of Franklin", replacing it with a newer, high-tech version. The sad thing, is in the transformation of Franklin you lost what was so important.....a nostalgic feel that made kids feel welcome and a part of the Woodland community. Some things are better left alone, I guess. Here's hoping to only 26 episodes.
