According to organizer Reed Midem, MIPCOM concluded its 2001 run with a grand total of 1244 exhibiting companies, up nearly 5% from the previous year. Although attendance was down almost 15% from last year, the optimistic attitude of the participants, despite the troubling world events, made this year’s MIPCOM a success. As MIPCOM’s Personality of the Year, MTV CEO Tom Freston stated, “TV will bounce back.” MIPCOM Junior saw encouraging signs for the international children’s programming business. Fewer delegates attended (down to 674 from last year’s 760 participants), but 389 companies from 53 countries took part in the 2-day children’s programming event, which improved on last year’s numbers. According to organizers, animation topped the viewers choice at this year’s MIPCOM Junior, with over 481 animated programs screening more than 9300 times over the weekend. 2020, the new animated series from Neptuno Films, was the most viewed program among a total of 758 presented at MIPCOM Junior in Cannes. TV-Loonland’s big push on their new series DA MOB paid off with a second place finish in viewings.
