THE SIMPSONS yet again claimed the primetime TV toon crown scoring an 8.6 rating/13 share in 38th place. KING OF THE HILL notched in a four-way tie for #68, garnering a 5.8 rating/9 share. Not preempted by NFL football, FUTURAMA took the 84th slot with a 4.3 rating/7 share. The premiere of GARY & MIKE placed high for its fledgling network, UPN. With extreme help as a follow-up to WWF SMACKDOWN on Thursday, the new stop-motion cartoon kicked off with a 3.6 rating/5 share in 86th place. In its regular Friday 8 pm slot, GARY & MIKE could only muster up a 2 rating/3 share and place in a three-way tie for 102nd. UPN also premiered its airing of MTV's CELEBRITY DEATHMATCH on Fridays following GARY & MIKE. The clay-animated carnage drummed up a 1.7 rating/3 share in 108th place. Also in 108th place was a brand new episode of THE PJS on the WB. With reruns of CELEBRITY DEATHMATCH on UPN scoring the same ratings as a new episode of THE PJS, the future doesn't look bright for Eddie Murphy's stop-motion laugher. These ratings and shares represent primetime TV in the U.S. on broadcast networks for the week starting Monday, January 8 through Sunday, January 14, 2000. A rating is the percentage of households that tuned into the program in the entire universe of TV homes. The universe estimate for the 2000-2001 television season is 102.2 million TV homes. Each rating point represents one percent of that universe, or 1.022 million TV homes. Translation: THE SIMPSONS, with an 8.6 rating, was viewed in just over 8.78 million (8.6 x 1.022 million) households. A share is the percentage of homes with TVs being used at that given time.
