Cablevision to Offer New Disney Channel on Demand
Disney's new branded service, Disney Channel on Demand, will be offered to Cablevision's 400,000 digital TV subscribers across the nation for an additional $4.95 per month. As part of a pact with ABC Cable Networks Group, this video-on-demand package consists of original series programming for preschoolers from Playhouse Disney and original movies and series for older kids.
The Disney subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) package will allow subscribers to pick and choose individual programs for an additional fee. Disney Channel reaches across 81 million U.S. households.
This marks the brand's first alliance with a U.S. cable company, but represents Cablevision's sixth such offering, alongside packages from HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, FOX and Playboy.
Cablevision, which serves some 3 million New York-area subscribers, will provide the package for subscribers already receiving Disney via the extended basic or premium package basis. ABC Cable Networks is pursuing other digital service opportunities in the U.S.
The announcement comes on the heels of last week's outlining of a disposable DVD online download service between Disney, Movielink.com and Movie Beam datacasting service.
